Joe David "Papoo" Barger, age 75, of Northport, AL, passed away Tuesday, October 29 at the home of his daughter Geanie in Northport.
Joe worked at City Cafe while he was a senior at Tuscaloosa County High School bussing tables. He and his wife Mary Barger bought City Cafe in 1974. He started the business with one dining room and turned it into a three-dining room restaurant. He fed everyone and anyone that just needed a warm meal. He respected each person regardless of their religion, race, or pocketbook. He just wanted to make sure you were full and happy when you left. He was a quiet and humble man, who spoke softly. He was honorable and kept everyone's business private. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was the best boss, who knew and appreciated the staff that helped build his legacy. His kindness, wisdom, love, and charity will always be missed and remembered.
Joe D. was preceded in death by his father, Terril; mother, Dorothy; and his brother, Marty Barger. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary Anne Barger; daughters, Geanie Brown and Jodi Rosenberg (Tony); brother, Bobby Barger (Ann); sisters, Linda Chambliss and Pamela Barger; three grandchildren, Nick Brown, Skylar Rosenberg (Gavin), and Tony Rosenberg; and extended family, Cynthia Johnson.
